Weather, clubs draw golfers to Valley
By Pat Whitney
With more than 325 days of sunshine annually, the Greater
Phoenix area is an outdoor enthusiast's haven. For golfers, it's
pure heaven.
More than 200 golf courses have helped earn the Valley of the
Sun the title of "Golf Capital of the World" by the National
Golf Foundation. And, on many of the courses, the biggest
challenge to making par may not be the severely undulating
greens, desert arroyos, rugged boulders or tricky putts, but
fighting the temptation to be mesmerized by the magnificent
scenery.

"At the Phoenician, a 27-hole golf course offers the challenge
and diversity golfers long for, plus the beauty and tranquility
that makes the game even more enjoyable," says Debora Bridges,
public relations director at the Phoenician. Three distinctive
nines‹the Oasis Nine (tropical setting with water features), the
Desert Nine (lush landscaped desert terrain) and the Canyon Nine
(sweeping views of the Valley) represent the variety of golf
found in the Valley.
Tom McCahan, golf manager at the Boulders Resort, feels what
separates golf here from other places is its uniqueness with
greens cut right through the desert.
At the Dinosaur Course at Gold Canyon, one of the East Valley's
finest courses, undisturbed desert vistas, scenic canyons and
some of the most impressive mountains in the Phoenix area serve
as a backdrop to the greens.
Eagle Mountain in Fountain Hills is played at 1,900 feet
elevation, unveiling clear views of the tops of the McDowell
Mountains, Red Mountain and the Superstitions 60 miles away.
Scott Miller's desert course, winding through natural box
canyons, rolling hills and lush desert valleys, is a testament
to the marriage between nature and man's creations.
Conditions in the Valley of the Sun - the warm, dry climate,
hospitality and level of service - make Arizona golf second to
none. The variety of golf is unmatched, according to Don Rea,
director of golf at Eagle Mountain and Augusta Ranch in Mesa.
Eagle Mountain was recently voted "Best New Public Course" by
the Arizona Republic's "AZ Golf" section.
McCahan touts the quality of public courses.
"Several of the newer courses that have opened up like Wildfire
at Desert Ridge, Grayhawk, Talking Stick, and top-rated Troon
North have increased competition and raised the level of play,"
he says.
The Greater Phoenix Area is home to 10 Four-Star and 29
Three-Star golf resorts including traditional golf havens like
the Arizona Biltmore and Camelback Inn. Perhaps no course is
more meaningful to golfers than playing at the Tournament
Players Club (TPC), home of the FBR Open.
"Everybody who plays golf and follows tour play likes to play
where the pros play," says Russ Norris, director of marketing at
the TPC. "With its PGA tour-like conditions, a golfer can feel
he was a 'tour player for a day'."
Norris adds, "Scottsdale has the best selection of daily fee
high-end golf in the world. With 15 to 20 high-end courses like
the TPC, Troon North and the Boulders that maintain impeccable
conditions throughout the year, it's hard for residents and
visitors alike to decide which course to play."

Valley
With sizzling temperatures keeping
golfers at bay during the summer, Valley golf courses attract
fewer crowds. But during the peak winter months, winter
visitors, tourists, conventions and avid resident-golfers book
the best tee times weeks in advance.
Finding the best tee times during the winter depends on the
course and clientele, says Don Rea, director of golf at Eagle
Mountain in Fountain Hills and Augusta Ranch in Mesa.
"The majority of the winter visitors in Mesa play the smaller
courses," he says. "At our executive course, the clientele is
more likely to be 50 and over with the par set at 61 for 18
holes. Play is slower - three hours for nine holes - as opposed
to Eagle Mountain where golfers play it in two. Retirees usually
prefer mornings during the week, opening up tee times on the
weekends."
Higher-end courses, on the other hand, attract more tourists and
see bigger crowds on Thursday thru Sunday, he says.
Despite rates of $200-plus for 18 holes - cost of high-end golf
in the Valley - getting the tee time you want may be hard to
get, especially at the top-rated courses. Winter visitors and
residents often play the smaller courses where seniors can play
nine holes for as low as $24.
Smaller, quality budget courses include: Stonecreek in Phoenix,
The Legend, in Glendale, Coyote Lakes in Surprise, Kokopelli in
Gilbert, Whirlwind in Chandler and Foothills in Phoenix.
At the Boulders Golf Club and Resort, golf manager Tom McCahan
says the best time to avoid crowds is Monday through Wednesday
or on Sunday. Best tee time is 9 to 11 a.m. at the resorts' two
courses.
"A lot of good public courses in this area may not always be as
busy as you might think," he says.

Arizona
is the largest city in the metro area and the state and
contains 25 public, private and resort golf courses. With
Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport just east of the downtown area,
access to many of the courses is within 20 minutes.
Many of
the courses in the city of Phoenix are well known,
established golf clubs with a rich history. The Phoenix
Country Club and Arizona Biltmore Country Club, to name just
a couple, are known throughout the country as distinguished
clubs. Others such as Wildfire Golf Club and Phantom Horse
Golf Club are situated at large resorts to accommodate
families and tournaments. Among the city-owned golf courses
are Cave Creek Golf Course and Papago Golf Course, which is
usually ranked as one of the top city courses in the nation.
Regardless of which direction you go, you will find
exceptional golf.
